Mary, aged 8, lives in an area near Accra where Buruli ulcer is endemic. Bacteria had removed most of the skin from her right leg and were still active in her ankle when we met her.
The disease was halted and a new electric dermatome brought out from Scotland in July 2004 was instrumental in providing sufficient skin from her left leg and stomach to graft onto the affected areas.
Mary is recovering well and will suffer no disability.
